Plant poisoning

There are about 1000 poisonous plants in Australia. Of course, not all of them will cause harm to your horse but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

TIPS

  • Bored or hungry horses are more likely to eat plants they otherwise would leave alone – make sure your horse is well-fed and well-stimulated.
  • Check your paddocks for potentially hazardous plants.
  • To help you recognise the risks, the Australian Government’s Rural Industries and Research Corporation has produced a Plant Poisonous to Horses field guide. You can download it here
