PREVENTING INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Infectious Diseases

When your horse is sick, it can be very distressing, but there are steps you can take to keep any infection from spreading to others horses or animals.

TIPS

  • If your horse becomes sick, isolate it from other horses, other animals and people, and take appropriate personal biosecurity measures just in case your horse has a disease such as the deadly Hendra virus, which is transmissible to people.
  • Seek your vet’s advice as soon as possible.
  • Use separate equipment, including rugs, halters, lead ropes, feed bins, and grooming brushes, for the sick horse – ideally, keep using separate equipment but, at the very least, disinfect all your equipment before using it on other horses.
  • Always handle healthy horses before handling sick horses so you don’t spread disease.
