How do I know if my horse has worms?

The signs of worm infestation can vary from horse to horse. Some of the key signs include: loss of appetite, poor growth, weight loss, anaemia (worms may damage blood vessels associated with the gut), tail rubbing, coughing in young foals, and colic (abdominal pain). A vet can conduct a Faecal Egg Count to diagnose the nastiest worms. This involves a microscopic examination of fresh manure to determine the number of parasite eggs. Worms can be controlled with regular treatment.
