Hendra vaccine now approved for use in pregnant mares

We are pleased to announce the Hendra virus vaccine, Equivac® HeV, has now been approved for use in pregnant mares.

After meeting all safety and efficacy criteria, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), deemed the vaccine to be safe in pregnant mares, including unborn foals.

This means that the APVMA has approved the safety profile of Equivac HeV for pregnant mares and horse owners can vaccinate a horse that is pregnant or expected to conceive.

The Hendra virus is deadly to both horses and humans. Horse owners are encouraged to speak with their veterinarian about a Hendra vaccination schedule for pregnant mares yet to commence vaccination, or which may have ceased boosters after conceiving.

Since 2012, more than 415,000 doses of the Hendra vaccine have been administered to horses around Australia.
